How Would the Loss of Biodiversity Affect Humans? - Pradip Burman

People depend on biodiversity. However, millions of species are gravely endangered because of human’s petty gains. Diverse species are the tireless stewards of the land, air, and water, and we need them for continued survival on Earth.

The loss of biodiversity is threatening our lives and taking us to the severity and climate adversity.

Here are some key facts that are threatening our future due to the increased biodiversity loss:

     Threats to Health Pharmacological Sciences

The constant drop in the biological diversity of microorganisms and flora & fauna is a huge concern in human health and pharmacological sciences as we also depend on nature for medical and pharma discoveries. If losing biodiversity continues, we may limit our discovery of potential treatments for many health problems and diseases.

Nutritional Impact on Humans Due to the Loss of
Biodiversity

Biodiversity plays a crucial role in human nutrition through various natural resources. The influence of loss in biodiversity on world food production is a great concern. We are forcing nature to work according to us and believing the sustainable productivity of soils, livestock, crops, and marine species continues.

The overconsumption of the environment is leaving grave imprints on the amount of nutrition. Food is a fundamental determinant for human survival & our health.

The species and genetic diversity play their role in cultivating the soil for edible plants’ breeds. But with the continued development of cities, infrastructure and urbanization are forcing them to endanger.

As a result, the nutritional composition between cultivars and food loss is affecting micronutrient availability in our diet.

     Sharp Rise in Infectious Diseases

Human activities are constantly disturbing both the structure and functions of eco systems & native biodiversity.
Such disturbances result from the abundance’s reduction of some organisms. This
is causing
population growth in other species and altering the interactions between organisms & their chemical and physical environment.
The pattern of infectious diseases is sensitive. It is transmitting dangerous diseases into the lives of people. However, it is completely normal, as we have already damaged nature with our acts, such as deforestation, land use-change and over construction through irrigation, dam
building, urban sprawl to pesticide chemicals used to control disease, climate
variability, and change.

Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Human Health

Biodiversity offers various ecosystem services that are important to human well-being at present and in the future. However, the climate is another integral part of ecosystem functioning, which affects human health directly and indirectly. The increasing climatic conditions & marine ecosystems are also impacting human lives in diverse ways.

As we are making the ocean toxic with the rising levels of carbon in the atmosphere, we face disastrous conditions, such as drought and flooding. However, it is not the only fact; we are also barricading the cycle of the ecosystem and plant growth.

How Mobius Foundation is Making an Impact on Restoring Our Environment?

Mr. Pradip Burman founded Mobius Foundation, a non-profit organization in Delhi to spread awareness of why the environment is important for survival. It has launched a mass tree planting campaign in 2018 under the name of ‘Project Sanjeevani’ and planted over 5000 saplings in collaboration with many schools, self-help groups, farmers, NGOs,
and Kisaan club members.

With the initiative, Mobius Foundation believes in reducing pollution and carbon footprint individually by practising sustainability and planting trees.

He has been the director of his ancestral company Dabur India and founded Ayurvet, selling herbal products for animals. Looking up to social leaders and philanthropists all his childhood, he has imbibed an enthusiasm for environmental conservation. As he grows up, he lends his hand towards various social causes.

A mechanical engineer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, Pradip Burman has been majorly curious about social work since his college days. He developed a sonic aid that benefits visually challenged people and locates the hindrances utilizing ultrasonic wave signals from the sonic machine.

Being the head of Dabur has stimulated him to select natural ingredients, i.e. Ayurveda medicine, to cure health issues like arthritis. He also focuses on the CSR activities of Dabur. He started a sustainable development community SUNDESH, where he worked for 25 years in villages to improve the life of the residents sustainably.

In one of his interviews, he says he has committed the rest of his life to preserve mother nature in all ways possible. In 2015, he launched a non-government organization called Mobius Foundation, which focuses exclusively on protecting the environment through awareness campaigns. These campaigns educate citizens to adopt sustainable methods in daily life.

Mobius Foundation focuses on improving the technique of “reduce, reuse, and recycle” that will help in zero waste management. Other focus areas include developing education, renewable energy, curbing pollution and population stabilization. There are also three main initiatives by Mobius Foundation:

  1. World Environment School (WESc): WESc is a green school constructed according to the sustainability guidelines and spreads across 100 acres of hills in Coorg. It’s a primary school where the students are taught about practical experience in sustainability development.

  1. Project Akar: Overpopulation affects sustainable guidelines and every other factor of environment preservation. Therefore, Project Akar aims to decrease the rate of births by educating about family planning and the benefits of using contraceptives.

  1. Gyan Anant Vidyalay (GAV): GAV is a school introduced in backward rural areas and villages of India to educate youth about sustainable development and how to reduce the consequences of resource extinction in the future.

Environment protection through sustainability is not a one-person show. As citizens, we should come ahead and fruitfully lend our hands towards it. According to Mr Pradip Burman., “We are at war to save this planet, and we have lost a battle. We must win this war by acting in unison for the survival of future generations.”

Pradip Burman's Story of Grit and Determination

He established Mobius Foundation in 2015 with the sole purpose of environment conservation.

Even at 79, Pradip Burman, the zestful environmental crusader is talking about sustainability to promote climate justice & humanity on the Earth. He refuses to rest to the convenience and comfort in the modern world because it adds pressure to nature for producing natural resources that cause climate change.

 An Advocate of Sustainability

Burman believes that sustainability is the answer for continued survival and a must step for saving the planet.

Due to the uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources by human beings, the world today is standing on the brink of destruction. The human race has reached the peak of progress and development is happening in a very unsustainable manner.

Mobius Foundation: The Change for Sustainability & Future Development

Mobius Foundation, NGO for Environment Protection .With the vision of sustainable development and environmental justice, Pradip Burman paved his way to found Mobius Foundation. He borrowed the name from 18th-century German mathematician August Ferdinand Mobius. The foundation aimed to spread the principle ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ to help generations to come and live as we are living today.
